QuickTake:

Two fires near the Randy Papé Beltline came close to campsites where people are living. The fires came on the heels of three suspicious blazes along the Riverbank path a week ago.

Firefighters responded to two brush fires about a mile apart near the Randy Papé Beltline on Tuesday, July 22, in the Danebo neighborhood.

The first fire started around 1:15 p.m. at Beltline and Roosevelt Avenue, according to Eugene Springfield Fire. The fire grew in windy conditions to about an acre, burning thick brush and blackberry bushes, and it threatened nearby campsites where people are living.

A second fire was reported around 4:30 p.m., about a mile away, along the Fern Ridge Path near the Beltline. It burned roughly a quarter of an acre.

Both fires were put out, and no one was injured.

Authorities could not immediately say Tuesday if the incidents were connected. The Fire Marshal’s Office is working with Eugene Springfield Fire to investigate.

Fire marshals have been investigating a series of suspicious brush fires that burned July 14 near the East Bank section of Eugene’s Riverbank Path. Those fires burned in dense vegetation all within a mile-long section of the path.

Brush fires are common in the summer months as dry fuel and human activity create high fire risk. Even routine actions such as driving or parking on dry grass can spark a blaze when a hot exhaust system ignites tinderlike vegetation.

While June brought some rain to Oregon, drought conditions persisted statewide. Nearly all areas in Oregon remain abnormally dry or in drought, according to the latest fire potential outlook from the National Interagency Fire Center. The center forecasts a greater-than-usual chance of significant fires through September.
