Wyndham Clark survived.
The former Oregon men’s golfer began the final round of the U.S. Open six shots ahead of his closest competitors. He didn’t end it there — not that it mattered.
In the end, Clark was still ahead, and now the former Duck is a two-time major champion.
Clark shot a 3-over 73 to finish at 4 under, earning a one-shot victory over Sam Burns at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
It was Clark’s second U.S. Open victory after he claimed the 2023 title at Los Angeles Country Club. He led this one wire-to-wire, becoming the first player to do so since Martin Kaymer in 2014, although it certainly didn’t feel comfortable Sunday.
Clark’s six-shot lead entering the round was down to one by the turn. It wasn’t until Clark rolled in a 24-foot birdie putt on the par-5 16th hole that the 32-year-old finally found some breathing room against Burns, who began the day seven shots back and shot a 3-under 67.
Clark competed at the University of Oregon in 2016-17 after beginning his collegiate career at Oklahoma State. At Oregon, Clark was named the 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year, earned first-team all-conference honors and won the Pac-12 championship.
