QuickTake:

Ideal weather conditions led to fast times at the Eugene Marathon and Half Marathon. Including the 5K, there were 10,724 finishers between all three race distances, a record.

Conditions were perfect for running Sunday at the Eugene Marathon: overcast skies, little wind, 48 degrees at the start.

For after the marathon? It was a little chilly.

Anna Kenig-Zeisler can attest to that.

Kenig-Zeisler, 25, of Seattle, was the women’s marathon winner, in 2 hours, 36 minutes and 54 seconds — a personal best time for her by about two and a half minutes, she told Lookout Eugene-Springfield. She averaged 5:59 minutes per mile, and her time ranks No. 4 on the Eugene Marathon women’s record list.

But as she stood waiting for the awards ceremony to begin, Kenig-Zeisler was shivering.

The top three in the men’s and women’s divisions received trophies, giant bags of pancake mix from race sponsor Krusteaz (pronounced crust-ees), along with $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third.

Sarah Jackson, 36, of Austin, Texas, was second in 2:38:04, and Hiruni Wijayaratne, 34, of Miami, was third in 2:42:25.

On the men’s side, Bradley Hodkinson of Seattle won in 2:19:43.

Less than a minute later, the first local resident crossed the line: Logan Auxier, 23, of Springfield, who ran for Lane Community College, finished in 2:20:27. It was Auxier’s first time completing the marathon distance.

“That was such a good race,” said Auxier, who remembers running around the Eugene half marathon course as a child to cheer on his mother, Jessica Auxier, who was running. “I had the idea of a 2:20 marathon for my debut, if everything goes right, that could happen. But I couldn’t have dreamed of getting second.”

Bradley Taylor, 37, of Johnstown, Colorado, was third in 2:21:04.

Jackson Mestler, 27, of Eugene, won the half marathon in 1:05:05. Mestler is a graduate of Sheldon High School and the University of Oregon who specializes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and competed in the event at the 2024 Olympic Trials at Hayward Field.

The half marathon is seven times the distance of Mestler’s usual race distance — although he did not have to hurdle barriers or negotiate any water jumps on the roads of Eugene and Springfield.

On the women’s side, Hannah Calvert, 29, of Tacoma, Washington, was the winner in 1:16:43.

As of 3 p.m. on race day, results showed 3,817 marathon finishers, 4,592 in the half marathon, and 2,315 for the 5K, April 26. The 10,724 runners far exceed last year’s total of 8,856 from the three races.

Race organizers had no updates on the condition of a man who collapsed earlier in the day after the half marathon. They issued a statement at 3:20 p.m. that read:

“A half marathon runner collapsed just after crossing the finish line of the Eugene Marathon this morning. He received immediate medical attention on the track from both the Eugene Marathon medical team and Eugene-Springfield Fire before being transported to a nearby hospital.”
