A 25-year-old Eugene man arrested in connection with multiple car thefts is also suspected of fleeing the scene after striking and injuring a bicyclist while driving a stolen truck, police said.
Steven Ronald Fischer Jr. is alleged to have been driving a stolen Chevrolet Silverado truck May 20 eastbound on East 15th Avenue in Eugene that struck a 40-year-old woman riding south on High Street in a protected bicycle lane.
“The victim was run over by the truck and injuries were extensive resulting in multiple surgeries and what will likely be years of physical therapy,” Eugene police said in a news release.
The day of the collision, police found an abandoned stolen truck they say was involved in the collision.
After obtaining a search warrant, police found a contract document for a storage unit rented to Fischer, according to the news release. Police said a search warrant obtained for the storage unit led to the discovery of “property from multiple stolen vehicles.”
Police arrested Fischer June 1, and he has been charged in Lane County Circuit Court with failure to perform duties of driver to seriously injured persons and third-degree assault.
In a separate pending case, Fischer has pleaded not guilty to two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle. Other criminal charges have also been filed against him separately.
