A 35-year-old Junction City pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday, May 5, on Highway 99 West near Junction City.

Joel Robert Benjamin Coriell was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and later died, Oregon State Police said in a news release Thursday.

State police responded at 4:48 p.m. to the scene, where investigators say Coriell had been walking on the southbound shoulder of the highway when he was struck by a southbound Hyundai Elantra.

A preliminary investigation found that the 16-year-old girl driving the vehicle “became distracted, left the travel lane, and struck” Coriell, state police said in the news release.

The driver sustained minor injuries and remained on the scene, cooperating with investigators, state police said.

The Junction City Police Department, Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Transportation also responded to the collision.
