Markets, festivals and more
Mother’s Day Powwow
University of Oregon’s Native American Student Union welcomes everyone to its Mother’s Day Powwow, in its 58th year. The three-day celebration begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 8, at McArthur Court, 1601 University St., with traditional dances and drumming. More competitions take place from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday. Spring Mother’s Day Market
Sweet Salvage hosts its Spring Market for the 11th year. Enjoy drinks, fare from a variety of food trucks, live music and a spring market featuring a wide selection of handmade gifts, industrial and salvage goods, jewelry, painted furniture, garden items, repurposed vintage clothing, candles and soaps.
Northern Lights Farm, 36777 Wheeler Road, Pleasant Hill, is surrounded by gentle hills, barns and farm animals, making for a relaxing day of shopping. The market kicks off at 4 p.m., Friday and opens at 10 a.m., Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $5 here or at the door.
Art in the Garden Mother’s Day Festival
The Thyme Garden, 20546 Alsea Highway, Alsea, is celebrating moms all weekend during the herbal nursery’s Art in the Garden Mother’s Day Festival. Enjoy a variety of live music, artists and food while exploring The Thyme Garden’s display gardens and lush forest paths along its 80-acre farm. Wine and beer will be served, as well as May wine, a German springtime tradition of sweet woodruff-infused white wine. Get tickets, $5 per person, at the door. It runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 9-10.
Mom’s Night Out at Cottage Grove Speedway
Take mom to the races Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway’s Mom’s Night Out, 2150 N. Douglas Ave., Cottage Grove. The event, 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 9, features racing from late models, sprint cars, street stocks and more, as well as concession stands and a beer garden. Get tickets at the door: $16 for adults; moms get in free.
‘Mamma Mia’ at The Hult Center
The Hult Center is showing the hit jukebox musical “Mamma Mia” from May 6-10. The show centers on a young woman and bride-to-be on a fictional Greek island, hoping to discover who her true father is. She reads her mother’s old diary, finds three potential candidates and invites them to her wedding for a chaotic, romantic and ABBA-fueled adventure. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the musical. Get tickets here; $44 to $79 per ticket.
A trip to wine country
If your mom needs to unwined (see what we did there?), take her to one of several nearby wineries, several within a 30- to 40-minute drive. Willamette Valley Wineries Association has a full list that you can filter by region and city. Reservations are recommended, especially on Mother’s Day.
Add some craft to your wine: This Saturday, May 9, Oregon Wine LAB, 488 Lincoln St., Eugene, is hosting a hands-on floral design workshop and wine tasting at its urban winery from 2 to 4 p.m. Limited spots are available. Get tickets here. Also happening Saturday: High Pass Winery, 24757 Lavell Road, Junction City, is hosting a Pre-Mother’s Day “Paint and Party” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on its beautiful vineyard. Limited spots are available. Get tickets here.
Pastries at the park
Prefer a low-key Mother’s Day? Head to a bakery early Sunday morning, grab the freshest pastries and have a morning picnic with wildflower views at one of Eugene or Springfield’s many parks, such as Hendricks Park, Owen Rose Garden, Mount Pisgah and Dorris Ranch.
For last-minute gifts
If you’ve been procrastinating on Mother’s Day gifts, Lane County Farmers Market and Eugene Saturday Market will save you. Head to downtown Eugene this Saturday, grab flowers and brunch ingredients at the farmers market (open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Farmers Market Pavilion), and find gorgeous jewelry and other artisan-made goodies next door at the Saturday Market (open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Park Blocks).
