A 67-year-old Eugene man has been charged with three counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse after already facing charges from an investigation in Linn County last year over a hidden camera.
Timothy Lawrence O’Brien was charged Monday, April 13, in Lane County Circuit Court. Under state law, first-degree encouraging child sex abuse can involve distributing a visual recording of sexually explicit conduct involving a child.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office arrested O’Brien last September on suspicion of placing a hidden camera in a park bathroom near Crawfordsville, roughly 30 miles northeast of Eugene.
In Linn County, O’Brien has been charged with two counts of first-degree invasion of personal privacy and two counts of second-degree invasion of personal privacy. Court records show he was released in September from Linn County Jail. His next scheduled court appearance in Linn County is scheduled for April 30.
Eugene police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said a Eugene police detective, after being contacted by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant Sept. 4 of O’Brien’s home in Eugene. The new charges were filed after the processing of evidence, McLaughlin said.
