The former teacher is alleged to have “groped and caressed” a student’s waistline during a school trip he chaperoned.
A second former student at Junction City High School has sued alleging sexual grooming by a former teacher at the school.
A seven-page complaint filed Friday, March 27, in Lane County Circuit Court alleges Mike Shultz “groped and caressed” a student’s waistline during a photo taken during a 2023 school trip on which Shultz served as a chaperone.
The lawsuit comes about four months after a lawsuit alleging Shultz sexually groomed a different student through suggestive touching and comments.
Both lawsuits have been filed against the Junction City School District, alleging negligence, in addition to Shultz. The most recent lawsuit seeks up to $500,000 in damages for emotional trauma, including a lack of trust in teachers and difficulty with emotional intimacy.
The district’s superintendent, Troy Stoops, said in an email that Shultz resigned and that the district had yet to receive formal notice about the latest lawsuit.
While Stoops did not respond to questions about how long Shultz worked at the district, a listing of high school staff for the 2024-25 school year does not list Shultz.
Shultz also is not listed in state online records for teachers with active and valid licenses.
The first lawsuit against Shultz alleged repeated physical contact — five to 10 times from 2022 to 2024 — with a student helper when the two were alone in a classroom. The touching allegedly included “smacking plaintiff on the buttocks,” touching the top of her thigh and pressing his body against hers, according to a lawsuit filed Nov. 17.
Last year, Junction City Police Chief Mark Waddell said no criminal charges were filed against Shultz after allegations of misconduct were investigated by police and the Oregon Department of Human Services.
The most recent lawsuit says a student, identified only by the initials B.K., in fall 2023 was a member of the Junction City High School’s Skills USA Club overseen by Shultz and another teacher, who is not named in the lawsuit.
The alleged groping took place Oct. 23, 2023, during a photo with other team members, the lawsuit states. On the same trip, Shultz is alleged to have asked the student to call him “Daddy” to “play a prank on the other teacher in charge.”
The lawsuit alleges Shultz “engaged in activities in order to sexually groom and control B.K. in order to arouse and gratify his own sexual desires.”
Both former students are represented by Eugene attorneys Lourdes Sánchez and Apolinar Montero-Sánchez.
