QuickTake:
Major Clemens has “graduated” out of intensive care, his mother said, after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a Feb. 17 shooting. Police have arrested one juvenile suspect.

Major Clemens, the eighth-grader shot in Eugene on Feb. 17, is awake and alert after sustaining life-threatening injuries, his family said.
“Major is such a strong young man!” his mother, Sarah Erickson, said Thursday, Feb. 26, in a text message.
Clemens spent days in a medically induced coma after being shot in the head, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with medical expenses. Clemens’ family updated the page Wednesday to say he’s alert and awake.
“This is a true testament to his strength, his amazing care team, and everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Hearing his voice has been nothing short of a miracle,” the updated GoFundMe page now says.
Erickson confirmed Thursday that her son “graduated” from the intensive care unit on Wednesday, “which means we are out of the critical stages.”
Eugene police had responded on the night of Feb. 17 to reports of shots fired near the intersection of Kinsrow Avenue and Marche Chase Drive in the Harlow neighborhood, about a half-mile east of Autzen Stadium. Police found Clemens in a parking lot.
While there remains “a very long road to recovery ahead of us,” Erickson said her family is “beyond thankful.”
“We are in the physical therapy ward of the hospital now, we could be here a month, we could be here a year, again we don’t know,” Erickson said. “I want to thank our community so much for their love, support, and generosity! They have shown up and shown out for sure!!! Keep praying for Major and his recovery!”
Police arrested one juvenile suspect last week on a charge of first-degree assault. Police Feb. 19 arrested a 16-year-old boy, police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said Thursday.
In a news release the day after the shooting, police said it was “not a random act,” but “an incident between a group of individuals.” The case remains open, McLaughlin said Thursday.
Angela Church, a cousin of Clemens, said last week the shooting followed an argument “between teenagers” at Valley River Center shopping mall, and that her cousin wasn’t armed. Police, however, have shared few details about the investigation or any dispute.
