A 14-year-old boy sustained life-threatening injuries after reports of shots fired in the Harlow neighborhood Tuesday, Feb. 17, Eugene police said.
Police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin confirmed the age of the victim Wednesday afternoon, but said no other information was available.
Officers responded at 9:46 p.m. near the intersection of Marche Chase Drive and Kinsrow Avenue to reports of people running and vehicles fleeing the area, police said in a news release.
As officers arrived, police received a report of an injured person in the parking lot of 330 S. Garden Way, the Chase Gardens Medical Center.
Officers provided immediate care until the arrival of medics with Eugene Springfield Fire. The victim was taken to a local hospital, police said.
In a press release Wednesday morning, police described the violence as “not a random act,” but rather “an incident between a group of individuals.”
Lookout Eugene-Springfield asked Eugene School District 4J spokesperson Kelly McIver if the shooting victim attended Monroe Middle School.
McIver responded in a statement that “staff and students at Monroe [Middle School] have become aware that one of its students has sustained a serious injury, which has generated widespread concern in the school community.”
Mental health and well-being professionals provided support to students and staff Wednesday and will continue at the school in the days ahead, McIver said.
“This is tremendously difficult for many of our staff and students,” McIver said.
The Eugene police Violent Crimes Unit and Forensic Evidence Unit also responded, with the investigation ongoing.
