QuickTake:
A man suspected of eluding police after an attempted traffic stop was later found outside an apartment, and officers found an explosive device in his vehicle, authorities said.
A man suspected of eluding police was found Wednesday, Dec. 3, with a device in his vehicle identified as a pipe bomb, Eugene police said.
Melvin David Bennett, 43, was booked into Lane County Jail on suspicion of unlawfully possessing a destructive device, a felony, in addition to felony eluding, as well as other misdemeanor charges.
Two Eugene police officers at 10:39 p.m. went to an apartment on the 2700 block of Willakenzie Road to arrest Bennett after an earlier traffic stop at Seventh Avenue and Lincoln Street in which a vehicle fled.
“Multiple agencies” had tried unsuccessfully to find the fleeing vehicle, but the officers had probable cause to arrest Bennett for eluding, police said in a news release.
Upon arriving outside the apartment, the officers positioned themselves to block a vehicle with Bennett in the driver’s seat from possibly fleeing, police said.
The officers arrested Bennett without incident, and the Metro Explosives Disposal Unit examined the device and took possession of it, police said.
Police did not release further details about the improvised explosive device. In general, pipe bombs can be made from off-the-shelf materials. Upon explosion, a section of pipe encasing the explosive material commonly breaks into pieces that fly through the air to harm those nearby.
