A man died Tuesday, Aug. 26, after shooting himself at a Springfield house following what police have described as a domestic assault.

Police were called at about 11 a.m. to the 700 block of 60th Street, Lt. George Crolly told KVAL in a video interview posted on the TV station’s website.

“We had no interaction with the suspect. By the time we got there it appears he had already committed suicide,” Crolly told KVAL.

Crolly said a woman had earlier fled the house and gone to a neighbor’s home, where she called police for help. Crolly said Springfield police responded to a report of shots fired as well as a domestic dispute.

Medics treated the woman for non-life-threatening injuries, Crolly said. In an email, Crolly said the woman was not shot.

“The assault was a domestic violence incident,” Crolly told KVAL, adding that the man and woman were married.

A Lane County Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle and drones deployed by officers from Springfield and the Eugene Police Department were used to approach the home the man was believed to be inside, Crolly said.

The drones showed the man down on the floor, apparently deceased, before SWAT officers and medics entered the home and confirmed that he had died, Crolly said.

Crolly said the man’s name is being withheld.
