After more than a year of closed lanes and project delays, the city of Eugene announced this week that seismic updates to the Chambers Street bridge at Roosevelt Boulevard are complete.
It is the second bridge the city has upgraded to withstand earthquakes, with construction on a third slated for next year.
Work on Chambers Street finished May 22, according to a press release from Eugene Public Works. All lanes have been returned to their normal configuration and Roosevelt Boulevard is open to through traffic.
Salem-based contractor Carter & Co. began work in March 2025. The project stalled last summer as the contractor waited for permits needed to access Union Pacific property under the bridge, which crosses over railroad tracks. Construction resumed in November.
The project cost $4.5 million and was paid for with $2.6 million in federal funds and $1.9 million in local funding, public works spokesperson Marion Suitor said in an email.
Late last year, the city finished a $1.3 million seismic upgrade on a bridge on Bailey Hill Road where it crosses Amazon Creek near West 11th Avenue.
At the end of 2027, the city plans to begin retrofitting the bridge on Goodpasture Island Road that crosses over Delta Highway.
City officials say the updates ensure emergency services can reach neighborhoods in the event of a major earthquake.
