QuickTake:
The director of the Eugene Public Library and the executive director of the library foundation are Friday’s guest speakers at the City Club of Eugene.
The Eugene Public Library dates to 1898, when a group of women from the Fortnightly Club established a circulating library in a private room. It was open one afternoon a week.
Today, the library has three branches, including a downtown branch at 10th Avenue and Olive Street, and satellite locations in the Sheldon and Bethel neighborhoods.
Friday’s meeting of the City Club of Eugene features a pair of speakers with ties to the past, present and future of the library: Angela Ocaña, the library director, and Dana B. Fleming, the executive director of the Eugene Public Library Foundation.
The meeting begins at noon at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave. Club meetings are open to the public and there is no attendance charge.
Ocaña, who has worked in several positions with the library since she joined its staff in 2017, will describe the latest programs offered by the library.
Fleming, who has served as executive director of the Eugene Education Foundation and on the board of the Lane County Cultural Coalition, will discuss the state of the library and its future.
Friday’s meeting comes days before the May 19 election, which includes a five-year library levy request to increase the current tax rate from 15 cents to 19 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The levy would raise $4.3 million for the library per year.
Because Ocaña is employed by the city, state electioneering laws bar her from speaking during work hours about the levy proposal. But Fleming’s role with the foundation allows her to discuss budgetary questions.
The City Club of Eugene itself does not have a position on the levy.
Friday’s program will be livestreamed on the club’s YouTube channel. Club meetings are rebroadcast Mondays at 7 p.m. on KLCC, 89.7 FM, and are available later on the club’s podcast.
