Municipal governments throughout Oregon — including Eugene — are struggling with budgeting woes as revenues fail to keep pace with expenses.
The Friday, Sept. 19, meeting of the City Club of Eugene will feature a discussion about the budgeting process with three people who have played roles in developing the city’s budget:
- Mike Clark, now serving his 19th year on the Eugene City Council;
- Tai Pruce-Zimmerman, who has served seven years on the city budget committee and who recently filed for election to the City Council;
- Brittany Quick-Warner, the president and CEO of the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.
The meeting begins at noon at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave. The meeting is open to the public and is free to attend.
Officials and volunteers working on the city’s budget this spring faced an $11.5 million shortfall. Earlier this year, the city council adopted a fire service fee to help close the gap, but a referendum petition spearheaded by the chamber placed the fee onto the ballot, prompting the council to repeal it. Instead, councilors approved an increase in stormwater fees to help fill the gap — and created a task force to look for long-term financial solutions.
The meeting will be livestreamed on the city club’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel. Meetings are rebroadcast Mondays at 7 p.m. on KLCC, 89.7 FM. The City Club of Eugene explores significant issues and works to formulate solutions to problems. Membership is open to all.Â
