The University of Oregon offers an Arabic language immersion program in Jordan, but no students or researchers are known to be in that country or others affected by a “depart now” advisory from the U.S. State Department, a UO spokeswoman said Monday, March 2.
An extended military campaign started Saturday by the United States and Israel in Iran has resulted in counterattacks on various countries in the region. Along with scores of fatalities in Iran from military strikes, deaths have been reported in Israel and other countries.
A U.S. government advisory published on social media Monday listed 14 countries in which Americans were advised to “depart now.” In addition to Jordan, the list included Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
“To the best of our knowledge, we do not have anyone in the affected areas right now,” UO spokesperson Angela Seydel said in an email.
No decision has been made about possibly suspending the Arabic immersion program, scheduled to start in June, Seydel said. In recent years between one and five UO students have participated in each session, Seydel said.
