Brief biography: I’m a former kindergarten teacher with over a decade of experience teaching in Springfield. It was my dream job for years. I resigned last April, my enthusiasm crushed by growing micromanagement from upper-level administration, enormous workload demands, and low morale reported from colleagues in nearly every building.

Current employment: Qualified behavior professional, joyfully supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental delays and disabilities.

Priorities: The current composition of the school board lacks the voice of someone with recent experience as an educator in our district. Building-level staff have a true pulse on the practical and real-time needs of students and families, as well as creative passion to solve many of those problems, although they rarely have opportunities to speak freely with the board. I endeavor to bring the value of staff perspectives and experiences, informed by direct relationships with students and their families, into the boardroom.

Cutbacks: In the most recent budget year, teacher salaries consumed 2.3% less of the overall operating budget than the year before, while administrative salaries consumed 0.7% more than the year before. I would be most willing to cut administrative and management salary expenditures, and least willing to make cuts that directly impact our most vulnerable students.

Local control: State and federal agencies and local school districts should have guiding and supportive relationships with districts, but local school boards must prioritize the needs and wishes of their communities when it comes to the daily “grind” of running schools. In order to fulfill the obligation to meet community needs, our school board must prioritize the perspectives of building-level staff and students’ families.
