I was distressed to read about the teardown of the river overlook that memorialized Maurie Jacobs. In his latter years, my dad, George Parman, got around in a wheelchair. The overlook put him close to the flowing Willamette — much more exciting, and moving, than the view from the banks. Even better, our family friend James Fisk took dad fishing there several times.

Eugene (unlike nearby communities including Springfield, Cottage Grove and Corvallis) is noted for a knee-jerk disregard of the past. This is an instance. I feel for Otto Poticha, who has watched his work go under the wrecking ball — and for what?
