I’ve been following Lookout’s recent coverage of Springfield Public Schools, including the latest editorial and news article. Both focus heavily on criticism and controversy. What’s missing is important context. Do either of them mention the district’s record graduation rates this year? How many times is the word “student” used? Once. In both pieces.

When coverage centers primarily on turmoil and politics while overlooking measurable successes, it shapes a narrative that feels incomplete. In an era when headlines about conflict draw more attention than stories about progress, it’s no wonder communities feel increasingly divided.

Public education is too important to be framed mainly through disagreement. Our community deserves reporting that reflects both challenges and achievements and keeps students at the center of the conversation.
