I live in Dexter and pay an annual fee to use the Springfield Public Library. I heard that in order to balance the budget the city government is considering cutting $500,000 from the library. This will substantially affect the services that the library can offer the public.

Why are all the cuts put on one department instead of proportionally allocating cuts to all departments in city government? It seems illogical and unfair.

Libraries were a place of refuge when I was young, and I don’t think that enough people recognize the good that libraries offer to those of us who need more support than they get at home.

Especially with the economy shrinking and putting more pressure and stress on families, these times require that we think more broadly and carefully about how we allocate our resources.
