I was shocked when I recently stopped at the Gateway Street post office in Springfield to see it in such disrepair. The post office, in every community I have ever lived, has always been a stalwart representation of American strength and pride. Last year, the Gateway post office grounds were unkempt and full of trash. Earlier this year there were broken windows. Now, the front doors are inoperative, and we are routed through the service entrance.
I know former U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy set out to economize the postal service, but the state of the place is appalling. Can an area garden club volunteer to help, like the Walterville garden group has done for the Walterville post office? What’s up?
