We no longer have a government of, by and for the people in America. We have a government of, by and for large corporations and the rich. Both dominant political parties get the money to run for office, money and perks while in office, and lucrative jobs after leaving office.

Evidence of late supports public affairs scholar Martin Gilens’ argument that “the preferences of the average American appear to have a minuscule, near-zero, statistically nonsignificant impact upon public policy.”

That is probably why, although public trust in government was close to 75 percent between 1940 and 1965, it has fallen to around 25 percent for the past decade. For 50 years, under Democratic and Republican administrations alike, inequality has been growing, as a laser focus on profit has eradicated all interest in ethics, fairness and the opinions of American citizens. Protests or voting for the lesser evil will not change this trend.

We need a third party not beholden to large corporations and the rich to make any effective change. But waiting for such a party to arise spontaneously is a bad bet. We have to build it ourselves if we want the United States to return to its founding principles: all men are created equal. Government of, by and for the people.

We the People Party of Oregon is a new political party on the ballot in Oregon. Our mission is to attract a large majority of Americans to join us, vote for our candidates and reestablish effective regulatory control over corporations, distribute more fairly the wealth our collective efforts have created, and implement the wishes of the majority of us citizens. We will not try, like the Libertarians or the Greens, to take positions on controversial issues. We will not depend on single charismatic personalities (though we welcome them to join us and run).

We will address issues at the local, state and national levels. Please join us and help renew our county. Visit the Lane County chapter website or send an email to wethepeoplepartylanecounty@proton.me to learn more.
