As an educator and lifelong Eugenean, I fully support Thomas Hiura for the Lane Education Service District Board, Zone 1. Thomas is running to represent the North Eugene zone he grew up in, which includes Cal Young, Harlow, Coburg, River Road and Santa Clara.

Now more than ever, we should elect school board leaders who understand the needs of students and their families. I have watched Thomas dedicate countless hours toward making sure every child in our area has a fair chance and the resources to succeed. If you know Thomas, you know he believes everyone in schools should feel safe, and like they are truly part of a community.

Aside from his experience in education, student affairs and college guidance, Thomas has spent thousands of volunteer hours working to make our area a better place to live. He has co-led the WOW Hall, a nonprofit all-ages music venue, to improve safety and resiliency, at a time when many nonprofits are feeling worn down.

He has been elected multiple times and co-led the City of Eugene Human Rights Commission, despite the demanding workload of keeping up with heated debates on human rights issues across our community and world.

I think where Thomas is most skilled is in teamwork and communication. He deeply listens to all voices, even when people share contrasting values and views with him. He sees the humanity in everyone and he will make an excellent board member for all of Lane County.

Thomas is the only candidate in his race who is taking public positions and campaigning about his goals for Lane ESD. I trust Thomas to be open with the public even when the work is difficult and tiresome.

I am proud to vote for Thomas Hiura on May 20.
