Overview:
Crews are scheduled to complete this phase of construction by Friday, Aug. 29.
Travelers will experience delays and detours around High Street and Fifth and Sixth avenues for several weeks due to city wastewater work.
The off-ramp from Coburg Road/Ferry Street Bridge viaduct onto Sixth Avenue is closed. So is the intersection of Sixth Avenue and High Street, and access to Fifth Avenue from High Street.
Southbound drivers on Coburg Road must use Eighth Avenue or East Broadway to head west, and drivers can take either High Street or Oak Street to access Sixth Avenue from Eighth Avenue or East Broadway.
Construction crews on Monday began digging long trenches in the ground to replace wastewater pipe. The work is one phase of the city’s effort to increase the wastewater system’s capacity to accommodate downtown riverfront development, Public Works Public Affairs Manager Marion Suitor Barnes said in a release Wednesday, Aug. 20.
“With several hundred new apartments recently built, and more development expected in the coming years, the wastewater system near the river in downtown Eugene requires upsizing,” Barnes said in the release.
Work will pause over the weekend, and the intersection and off-ramp will reopen on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24.
Crews are scheduled to complete this phase of construction by Aug. 29, after which travelers may still see occasional detours and delays around the High Street and Sixth Avenue intersection.
During this phase of construction, the city will reduce westbound traffic on Sixth Avenue east of High Street to a single lane on the south side, and will limit northbound traffic on High Street to a single lane on the west side after Seventh Avenue. Only a left turn will be available for drivers at Sixth Avenue from High Street.
The city is encouraging cyclists to use Pearl Street to travel south and Olive Street to travel north between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians, though people on foot will need to cross High Street at Sixth Avenue on the south side of the intersection.
Barnes said the construction was originally scheduled to occur at night, but “safety conditions” now require crews to complete the work during the daytime, which will have greater effects on travel.
The neighborhood has undergone other recent construction, including Eugene Water & Electric Board water main replacements on East Broadway from Alder Street to High Street and on Hilyard Street between East Broadway and East Eighth Avenue, beginning in July.
