QuickTake:
Are you coming to our party on Friday? Other than that, what are you up to this week? Here are some places to start filling out your calendar.
If you’re a Lookout member and are reading this, I hope your Friday night is already booked up, and you’re joining us for our members-only one-year anniversary celebration. When you’re all partied out, you’ll need more to do, though. Luckily, I have my picks ready to go. Let’s get into it:
Performances

Jonathan Van Ness: Hot & Healed
Celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness, a major breakout star of the Netflix reboot of “Queer Eye” and host of the podcast “Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness,” has once more pivoted to stand-up comedy, stopping in Eugene on their third stand-up tour. Who doesn’t want to be hot and healed?

Opening Night Gala for ‘Newsies’
The biggest theater event in town this weekend comes with an opening-night gala, a red carpet and months of preparation culminating in opening night for Sheldon High School’s production of “Newsies,” treated like a Broadway premiere with photo ops and a red carpet photographer.

Dance Week activities
I mentioned the start of National Dance Week last week, but it’s still ongoing through April 26. I wanted to call out two things in particular.
Flow in Love’s Hula Hooping sessions
Get hooping with three different sessions from Brittany Rae, one Friday evening for an adult partner hoop dance class (singles welcome, and hoops will be available to borrow or buy), one Saturday for “kiddos and their biggos,” and finally a circus-themed hoop flow class and community jam party with live music Sunday afternoon.
I met Rae at the clown workshop I wrote about earlier this year — she’s a really wonderful performer and creative. If you’re at all interested in hooping it up, check it out.

- Where: WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., Eugene

Crash the Cottage
It’s “A BRATTY RIVALRY DANCE PARTY,” meaning if you’d like to close your work week with a lot of Charli xcx blasting while people are in hockey-adjacent clothing as an ode to the “Heated Rivalry” phenomenon, this is the place to be.
- When: 8 p.m. to midnight, Friday, April 24
- Where: WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., Eugene
- How much: Tickets are available online starting at $20.
Movies
Box office
A complicated pop star double feature opens this week.
Stylish horror “Mother Mary” sees Anne Hathaway as a gigawatt musician reuniting with her former designer, in a red-light-bathed religious stagework aesthetic that, as you may guess from looking at a single second of the trailer, just might be supernatural. It’s got mixed reviews, but I love a spectacle-forward watch, so why not?
Playing at Metro Cinemas, Cinemark Eugene-Springfield 17 and Regal Valley River Center.
Then, there is “Michael,” the Michael Jackson biopic starring the singer’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson. It’s in a similar vein to the Broadway musical “MJ,” part of a controversy-skirting pop culture media authorized by the Jackson estate in recent years. The estate actually called for major changes to be made to the movie, with a $15 million reshoot and the removal of any mention of child abuse allegations. “MJ” was a massive success on Broadway and on tour, and “Michael” is expected to do very well.
Playing at Cinemark Eugene-Springfield 17 and Regal Valley River Center.
Screamfest Oregon
Time to get spooky in spring. I’d particularly like to plug this weekend’s Screamfest Oregon, a one-weekend-only “halfway to Halloween” film festival at the Art House. All-access festival passes are $75 and include admission to all 14 screenings.
Thank you for reading, Lookout members. If my picks aren’t up to your liking, check out our events calendar for more things to do. As always, if there are any events I should include here, or any feedback for this weekly list, drop me a line at annie@lookoutlocal.com.
