The Eugene Symphony will present its annual Symphony in the Park concert at 8 p.m. on July 27 at the Cuthbert Amphitheater, featuring its new music director.

The concert is free, but tickets are required and will become available starting July 1 at 10 a.m.

New music director Alex Prior will be conducting for the first time for the Eugene Symphony. Prior is a British composer, and the former chief conductor of the Edmonton Symphony.

At just 32 years old, Prior is bringing 19 years of conducting experience to Eugene. He made his professional conducting debut at 14 and graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia with top honors at 17. While Prior was with the Edmonton Symphony, he was the youngest artistic leader in history of a North American orchestra.

“We couldn’t imagine a better way to introduce Alex to our full Eugene community than at the Cuthbert,” Dave Moss, executive director of the Eugene Symphony, said in a press release. “It’s an evening that brings everyone together, families, longtime supporters, and first-time attendees, for a shared moment of musical celebration.”

The concert also features a guest conductor through its Maestro for a Moment program, giving one donor the opportunity to lead the orchestra. This guest is to be announced on July 14.

The program for the concert includes:

  • Richard Wagner’s “Prelude to Lohengrin”
  • Bedrich Smetana’s “The Moldau”
  • Young Artist Competition winner performance
  • Selections from “Frozen,” “Swan Lake” and “Moonshine”
  • John Williams’ score “Jurassic Park” and “E.T.”
  • “Armed Forces Salute” honoring veterans and active military

The symphony is encouraging attendees to bring nonperishable food items for donation to Food for Lane County.

The show is going on the road the following night to continue the performances at Bohemia Park in Cottage Grove at 7:30 p.m. for the residents in the area to enjoy without a commute.

“Our mission is to enrich lives through the power of music, not just in Eugene, but throughout the region,” Moss said. “Performing in Cottage Grove is part of our commitment to our neighbors, ensuring that live music is accessible to more communities and more families across the Willamette Valley.”
