QuickTake:
Some 30,000 new or gently used books and other items are on sale Saturday and Sunday at the Lane Events Center Performance Hall, with proceeds going to the Eugene Public Library.
If you want fresh reading material, this is the weekend for you: The Friends of Eugene Public Library’s April Book Sale — the organization’s biggest event of the year — is Saturday and Sunday at the Lane Events Center Performance Hall, 796 W. 13th Ave., in Eugene.
Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
Most of the 30,000 or so nearly new or gently used books — in almost every genre — can be yours for $2 each.
The Friends of Eugene Public Library has organized the April Book Sale since 1979, said Laura Cottam Sajbel, a board member. The money it raises — just under $68,000 last year — helps pay for library books, materials and programs.
That money is more important than ever, Cottam Sajbel said, noting the library has absorbed about $1 million in cuts during the last two years. The city’s general fund no longer pays for new books, materials, subscriptions or programming.
“We are very worried about the library’s budget,” she said, referring to the city of Eugene’s projected $11.5 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year that begins July 1. “We have no idea what’s coming down the pike.”
The Friends of Eugene Public Library hosts smaller book sales during the year, Cottam Sajbel said. ut the April event is the biggest, featuring 200 tables piled with books of all sorts as well as used audiobooks, CDs and DVDs.

This year’s sale includes a variety of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” paraphernalia — books, magazines, posters, games, puppets, scholarly studies and scripts from the TV show. The items are part of a collection that was donated to the Friends of Eugene Public Library.
Also available at the sale: A selection of comic books from the so-called “Silver” and “Bronze” ages of comic books. (If you’re curious, the Silver Age lasted from 1956 to 1970, while the Bronze Age dates from 1970 to 1985.) Most of the comic books are priced from $2 to $5 and come with plastic slipcovers.
If you want to get an early edge over the rest of the Saturday morning shoppers at the sale, here’s how to do that: Members of the Friends of Eugene Public Library can start browsing at 8 a.m. Visit friendseugenelibrary.org for membership information.
About 5,500 people attended the show last year, Cottam Sajbel said, and the biggest crowds typically arrive Saturday morning. But not all of the best buys will be gone by noon Saturday: Volunteers will restock the sale tables throughout the weekend.
