Contributing Editor

Mike McInally is a Pacific Northwest journalist with four decades of experience in Oregon and Montana, including stints as editor of the Corvallis Gazette-Times and the Albany Democrat-Herald.

He also has worked as a freelance editor and reporter for Oregon newspapers in Wallowa County, La Grande and Astoria and for news websites such as the Oregon Capital Chronicle.

Before moving to Oregon, he spent 25 years at the Missoulian newspaper in Missoula, Montana, where he started as a police and courts reporter and was promoted to positions including feature editor. During his tenure, the Missoulian’s feature sections were honored as among the best in the nation. He spent his last seven years in Missoula as the editor of the Missoulian before moving to the Willamette Valley in 2005.

His wife, Diane, is an accountant; they have two adult daughters. He is a movie fan, avid reader and a runner who is making his peace with his increasingly slow pace. He is active in the community and recently has served as an emcee for events including a chamber of commerce awards banquet and a spelling bee for adults.

McInally is excited about using digital tools and storytelling techniques to rejuvenate an essential local institution – the community newspaper. He’s always believed that the best community news organizations reflect their communities – celebrations and challenges alike. He looks forward to sharpening that local focus with Lookout Eugene-Springfield and finding new ways to tell vital stories about Lane County and its people.
