Mark Baker has been a journalist for more than 25 years, including 14 at The Register-Guard in Eugene from 2002 to 2016, and most recently the sports editor at the Jackson Hole News & Guide in Jackson, Wyoming. He’s also reported for newspapers in Alabama, Washington and California.

Mark’s forte is storytelling, and his stories have won dozens of state and regional awards over the years, including a 2015 “Best of the West” win among 97 entries for long-form feature writing and eight first-place awards in various reporting categories from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

He’s covered a wide range of topics over the years, from veteran actor Sam Elliott’s connection to Eugene, to the armed takeover of Eastern Oregon’s Malheur Wildlife Refuge, to the lingering mysteries surrounding the 1975 car-crash death of UO and American distance running legend Steve Prefontaine.

A 1992 graduate of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, ink runs in Mark’s blood. His grandfather, Alton F. Baker Sr., created The Register-Guard in 1930 when he merged The Eugene Guard with The Morning Register at 1041 Willamette St.

Mark is honored to be included as part of Lookout’s launch in Eugene and looks forward to returning to finding and telling the stories that make Eugene and Springfield and the rest of Lane County such a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family.

An avid University of Oregon sports fan, Mark is active in Eugene’s substance abuse recovery community and lives with his partner, Violet, a professional dog walker and avid runner, below towering Douglas firs in Southwest Eugene with their beloved dogs Harper, Russell and Ruby.
