The Timbers are getting old.

Just like that, it’s football season.

The Portland Timbers are turning 50 in 2025, and to kick off the celebration of their semicentennial season, the club opened the doors of Providence Park on Saturday for their once-every-five-year Axe Portraits.

I stopped by the stadium to chat with team photographer Craig Mitchelldyer and a few fans about their morning spent with axes and chainsaws as the 2025 season approaches on the horizon.

Tyson Alger covered the Ducks for The Oregonian and The Athletic before branching out on his own to create and run The I-5 Corridor. He brings more than a decade of experience on the University of Oregon sports beat. He has covered everything from Marcus Mariota’s Heisman Trophy-winning season to the Ducks’ first year in the Big 10.
