A 56-year-old Eugene man was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 6, on suspicion of raping a teenager, who told investigators she had been sexually abused over a two-year period, Eugene police said.
Cory Ellis Hatfield was booked into Lane County Jail on four counts of third-degree rape, defined in state law as having sexual intercourse with someone younger than 16. The Class C felony has a maximum penalty of five years for a single conviction. Hatfield was also booked on additional charges, including third-degree sodomy.
Eugene police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said police used automated license-plate recognition technology to find and track Hatfield in the days leading to his arrest, which took place after a traffic stop on Briggs Hill Road.
McLaughlin would not say how Hatfield met the teen. “We can’t provide that information in order to protect the privacy of the victim,” McLaughlin said.
