QuickTake:
Perfect weather conditions and a tailwind meant fast times, for pros and local elites alike.
Massachusetts weather in April is a mixed bag. You can get hot days, with temperatures into the 80s. Or you can get blizzards. Those running the famed Boston Marathon, on Patriots’ Day in New England, have seen extremes.
This year, Monday, April 20, was a perfect day in Boston — at least by marathoners’ standards. The temperature when the race started was 45 degrees and there was a tailwind pushing the runners from Hopkinton to Boston. (For the spectators, it was a little chilly.)
Lane County produced 11 runners who broke the three-hour barrier in Boston.
Among them was Lyndy Davis, 36, a Eugene mother of two who works as a manager in e-commerce for HP in Corvallis. She finished in 2:48:44, a little slower than she had been targeting.
Boston was the first time she ran with so many people — more than 32,000 runners were entered in the race. Around the 10K mark, at one of the fluid stations, her feet got soaked by other runners who were tossing their half-drunk water cups toward the side of the road.
The result? Blisters, on both feet, emerged at mile 10. And 16 miles is a long way to run with blisters.
Davis made the most of it.
“The crowds were phenomenal,” she said. “The weather was nearly perfect. It was so fun.”
Here’s how Davis and the other Lane County residents fared. All the locals who started the race finished the race.
