Good evening,
Not quite 20 years ago, I was living in Colorado; it was a few years before the state would become one of the first two to legalize recreational marijuana. But April 20 was a day marked on the calendars for many. And 4:20 on 4/20, to be specific.
Just up the road in Boulder, people would gather in a park and all fire up at once. Denver television stations were there to document what I guess was a resistance to what was still mostly illegal.
So today, Annie Aguiar set out to answer the question: With recreational marijuana legal and pot shops all over the place, is 4/20 still a thing? Turns out it is, but mainly for sales. You might say that April 20 is like Prime Day for Mary Jane.
As one person Annie spoke with said, “This is the day we wait all year for.”
Our friends at the Oregon Capital Chronicle have a couple of good stories today. Alex Baumhardt reports that after nearly two years, Oregon counties are set to once again receive money from the Secure Rural Schools Act. And Lane County will receive the most money of any county.
Ariana Figueroa reports that Oregonian and Trump Administration Labor Secretary, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, is stepping down. The Republican and former congresswoman is facing multiple reports alleging work misconduct, including misuse of funds.
And finally, candidates for Eugene City Council Wards 3 and 4 will be at the Eugene City Club meeting this Friday. If you want to prep for that session, you can watch our City Council forums that were held last week. Click here to watch candidates for Wards 3 and 5 and here to watch candidates for Wards 4 and 6.
Letters to the Editor from today and over the weekend:
- How many places belong to everyone? That’s why supporting libraries matters
- A capitalist system has turned PeaceHealth into something I don’t recognize
- When Eugene has needed help, John Barofsky has answered
- Elections, Ukraine, Iran. What does Putin have on the president?
- Humanity must speak out against the U.S. blockade of Cuba
- I realized all that county commissioners do, then found one I support
