The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Sunday, July 13, in Lane County, predicting temperatures in the mid-90s — and that could be just a warmup for even hotter days midweek.
The heat advisory, which begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, predicts a high of 96 in Eugene with morning winds that could gust up to 20 mph. The advisory is in effect until 10 p.m., with lows around 64 expected Sunday night and Monday morning.
Monday looks to be a little cooler, said Noah Alviz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland, with a high of 92.
Conditions warm up again on Tuesday and Wednesday — but not necessarily into the triple digits, as forecasters earlier thought. Tuesday’s high in Eugene is forecast at 93, with Wednesday topping out at 94.
Alviz said there’s still a 20% to 40% chance of temperatures in the 100s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“So there’s still that possibility for extreme heat, even though our current forecast doesn’t have it exactly that hot,” he said.
Alviz said nighttime temperatures, with lows dropping into the 50s or low 60s, should offer a measure of relief.
The National Weather Service issues a heat advisory when potentially dangerous heat conditions are expected — but conditions aren’t expected to rise to the level that would compel forecasters to issue extreme heat watches or warnings.
“The main message we want to give to the public is that you should practice heat safety throughout this time,” Alviz said. That means taking plenty of breaks from the heat if you’re outside. Drinking plenty of water. Wearing light-fitting, loose clothing. And, he added, “Definitely check on your neighbors and friends,” especially those without air conditioning.

The Eugene Public Library’s downtown branch is a designated cooling site and will be open Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
People often flock to waterways for relief on hot days, but Lane County first responders urge community members to use caution. Use a life jacket — and remember that many bodies of water remain cold despite the hot temperatures. If boating or swimming, beware of submerged hazards.
