Alice Parman’s letter to the editor in Lookout arguing for a sales tax got me thinking about a 5% tax proposed some years ago with all necessary exemptions and protection from raises. It was soundly defeated.

But maybe times have changed? How about a 3% luxury tax? A tax, for example, on new cars, houses worth more than $750,000, clothes worth more than $750, etc.

Before you squawk, seriously ask yourself: If I’m in that range of ability to pay, can’t I add 3% to help fund underfunded programs like education and social services? If I were in that bracket, I would welcome an easy way to help make my community a better place.
