In the wake of recent fatal collisions between bicyclists and vehicles, Eugene organizations plan a forum Thursday, Feb. 12, to discuss transportation safety problems and solutions.

The forum is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. in the Roosevelt Middle School cafeteria, 500 E. 24th Ave., Eugene.

Forum organizers at Better Eugene-Springfield Transportation, known as BEST, say the event will be “an evening of connection, reflection, and discussion, looking to transform recent tragedies into collective commitment to work for a better future.”

Three Eugene bicyclists have died since August from injuries sustained in collisions with vehicles. Most recently, Erick Munene Njue, a 30-year-old University of Oregon graduate student from Kenya, died Jan. 25 after being hit as he headed west on 22nd Avenue across Patterson Street.

The forum will provide attendees with the opportunity to voice concerns and hopes about transportation in Eugene. Marc Schlossberg, a University of Oregon professor of city and regional planning, will discuss possible solutions. Local officials, including Eugene Mayor Kaarin Knudson and Lane County Commissioner Laurie Trieger, also are scheduled to speak.

Light food and drinks will be served. To give organizers a sense of how many people plan to attend, RSVPs are requested. In addition to BEST, the forum is also sponsored by Greater Eugene Area Riders, the Lane Transit District, Shift Community Cycles, Associated Students of the University of Oregon, the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation, LiveMove, and University of Oregon Transportation Services.
