QuickTake:
Show your love this Valentine’s Day with creative food-and-drink date ideas, from a grilled cheese crawl to locally milled baked goods with gorgeous views of the Willamette Valley. No planning ahead is required.
Aside from jewelry, flowers and chocolate, a romantic candlelit dinner is the poster child of Valentine’s Day. And restaurants across Lane County have their candles, impressive prix fixe menus and wine pairings ready for next Saturday.
But if you’re not into that (or forgot to make a reservation), there are plenty other delicious and heartfelt ways to celebrate this day of love:
Craft a card, drink craft beer: Homemade is truly the best made, and The Bier Stein is giving you ample time to do just that with free Valentine’s Day card-making supplies. Stop by the bar and pub anytime between now and Feb. 14 to make a card for your partner or loved one, all while having a beer and a nosh. The Bier Stein, 1591 Willamette St., Eugene.
Head to a bakery: Love is truly in the air when you can smell just-baked sourdough loaves and cinnamon rolls. Fortunately, stellar bakeries abound in Lane County. They include old-school gems such as Metropol in Eugene (which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) and Saverio’s in Springfield; gluten-free bakeries Elegant Elephant in Eugene and Estelle in Springfield; and Camas Country Mill’s idyllic schoolhouse-turned-bakery near Junction City, to name a few. All are open Valentine’s Day.

Go on a grilled cheese crawl … Dozens of restaurants across Lane County are participating in this year’s Grilled Cheese Experience for the month of February. From a nostalgic grilled cheese (down to the white bread and tomato soup) to a brisket, brie and fruit jam combo, this year’s lineup has a range of delicious takes. As you eat your way through the list, you’ll also fight hunger in Lane County: With every sandwich purchased, Food for Lane County can provide four meals to a family in need. Find the full list, including vegan and gluten-free options, on the cheese cheat sheet. At participating restaurants in Lane County, from Feb. 1-28.
… Or a vegan crawl. Similarly, the Eugene Vegan Chef Challenge is happening all of February, with at least two dozen eateries offering new plant-based menu items that you can rate and vote on. Vegan poutine, Japanese tofu and potato stew, mac and cheese and mushroom bourguignon are among the specials. At participating restaurants in Lane County, from Feb. 1-28.

Celebrate V-Day the Mardi Gras way: PublicHouse’s annual Bourbon Street Fest promises live music, New Orleans-inspired cocktails from the Whiskey Lab, bourbon barrel-aged beers and ciders, and four food vendors cranking out étouffée, gumbo, po’boys and other Cajun and Creole dishes. PublicHouse, 418 A. St., Springfield, Feb. 11-17.
Catch your dinner: Valentine’s Day weekend marks one of three times per year the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife permits free fishing. That means you don’t need a license to crab, fish or clam anywhere in Oregon on Feb. 14-15. Fish & Wildlife has information on locations and popular species based on each of the state’s fishing zones, including the Willamette zone.
Channel your inner Stanley Tucci and get cooking: Cooking is an act of love, so why not dream up a Valentine’s Day feast? Keep it fresh and local by grabbing seasonal produce, meats, cheeses, fresh bread and wine from the Saturday Lane County Farmers Market that same day. At the park blocks, 126 E. Eighth Ave., Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Don’t forget dessert: Valentine’s Day should be treated like Halloween, an excuse to indulge in sweet treats. But don’t go for the mass-produced stuff. Locally, we are spoiled by housemade ice cream at Handel’s, Prince Pückler’s and Peek-A-Boo (all Eugene); candymakers and chocolatiers such as Euphoria (multiple locations in Eugene), See’s Candies (Eugene), and Burst’s Chocolate (Corvallis); and deluxe pastries and cakes from the likes of Noisette and Sweet Life Patisserie (both in Eugene). A fun new(ish) dessert spot: Shugabeibi: Their mochi Valentine’s Day box has iced rose champagne, strawberry shortcake and other special flavors for this soft and bouncy treat.
