Are your neighbors disturbing your peace with a never-ending display of illegal fireworks as the Fourth of July holiday nears?

Don’t call 911, the city of Eugene urges.

Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the year for Lane County 911, as dispatchers are flooded with complaints about fireworks. But unless someone is injured or there is an immediate threat to property, it’s not appropriate to dial 911 with a fireworks complaint, city officials said in a news release Tuesday. Calling 911 should be reserved for emergencies.

Instead, residents can use nonemergency numbers to report in-progress illegal fireworks:

  • Eugene: 541-682-5111
  • Springfield: 541-726-3714
  • Lane County unincorporated areas: 541-682-4150

Eugene Police Department has a dedicated fireworks enforcement team that will be working on the night of July Fourth.

In the meantime, residents in possession of illegal fireworks can get rid of them — with no questions asked and no citations issued — at two Illegal Fireworks Amnesty Turn-In Days, scheduled for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, and Saturday, July 5, at the parking lot at 1705 W. Second Ave., Eugene.

In 2022, the Eugene City Council banned the sale and use of fireworks within the city limits due to fire danger and their impact on people and pets.

Nevertheless, the use of some consumer fireworks is allowed in the city. Allowed fireworks and novelties include party poppers, snakes and certain novelty sparklers and smoke devices.
