The Cascades Raptor Center, facing what it calls a “critically low” supply of fish, is asking the local fishing community to donate trout or kokanee for its hungry birds.

The center accepts only fresh, unfrozen whole fish. Whole fish includes fish bones and skin necessary for a raptor’s diet, and unfrozen fish guarantees freshness.

According to Maddy Broedel, the center’s development director, this call for help happens two or three times a year, and donations are essential to its operations. The center’s raptors eat roughly 1.3 tons of food a year, and Broedel hopes the fishing community can come through once again.

“Spring is the busy season, and so right now, we’re trying to prepare ourselves for the future,” Broedel said. “The weather gets nicer, some species get more active, we’re more likely to come across injured wildlife.”

Cascade Raptor Center accepts fish donations year-round. To donate, the facility recommends calling 541-485-1320 in advance to schedule a drop-off time.
