Eugene Springfield Fire crews rescued an individual Saturday who became stuck in the low-head dam on the Willamette River.

Two water rescue boats responded to calls around 5:30 p.m. for an individual in the river near the Interstate 5 bridge, according to a statement from Eugene Springfield Fire.

Both the person stuck in the dam and another person were rescued and transported to the West D boat landing. Both were wearing life jackets, and neither needed medical assistance.

The low-head dam, a submerged barrier across the Willamette River between Eugene and Springfield, has been the source of multiple water rescues in recent years. River users and safety advocates have called for better warnings about the dam’s dangers to people floating on the river or for its removal entirely.

In June, the Willamalane Park and Recreation District posted signs about the “high risk of drowning” at the underwater dam.
