A local resident and a sheriff’s deputy pulled an injured person to safety early Sunday, Dec. 21, after a vehicle crashed down a 20-foot ravine and caught fire, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash took place at about 1 a.m. on Crow Road, about a mile east of Territorial Highway, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree and was engulfed in flames, the sheriff’s office said.

An injured passenger was unable to walk and was found near the burning vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The deputy climbed down the wet, muddy bank along with a resident who lived nearby and together they pulled the passenger to safety,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Both the driver, 18-year-old Tamika Rose Luttrell, and the passenger, not named by the sheriff’s office, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A preliminary investigation found that Luttrell, of Harrisburg, lost control of the vehicle while attempting to pass on a corner in a no-passing zone. Luttrell was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, and fourth-degree assault.
