QuickTake:

Eugene police, three days after the attack, arrested a suspect who remains in jail. It’s the fourth death this year in Eugene to likely be categorized as a willful murder, and arrests have been made in all four cases.

A 42-year-old man has died after being stabbed Dec. 2 in a downtown alley, Eugene police said Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Police found Douglas Eugene Beinhauer with serious injuries just after 10 p.m. in Oak Alley near 10th Avenue. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital after receiving emergency aid from police, according to a Eugene police statement.

Beinhauer died Friday evening, with the public announcement of his death delayed so family could be notified, police spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said. According to police information, Beinhauer was unhoused, McLaughlin said.

Immediately after the stabbing, a search of the area resulted in a heavy police presence downtown. But police did not arrest a suspect until three days later, on Dec. 5, when officers arrested 38-year-old Joshua Margarito Saldivar. Saldivar initially fled from patrol officers but was taken into custody in the 1300 block of West 17th Avenue. Saldivar continues to be held in the Lane County Jail.

A grand jury Dec. 11 returned an indictment that charged Saldivar with first-degree and second-degree assault, with court documents stating the assault involved a knife and also striking or kicking.

The indictment named Beinhauer as the victim of both assault charges, and stated that the alleged striking or kicking caused “greater or qualitatively different” harm to Beinhauer.

Saldivar also was indicted on an unlawful use of weapon charge, and, in a separate criminal case, has been charged with a Dec. 5 burglary of an “occupied dwelling” on the 1900 block of Taylor Street.

Though no murder charge had yet been filed as of Wednesday, Beinhauer’s death could be the fourth to be investigated as a willful murder this year in Eugene.

Previously, the March 3 shooting of Bryan Jivon Fitzgerald; the March 8 shooting of Justin Garrett Huser; and the March 29 stabbing of David James Valentine resulted in arrests and the filing of murder charges in Lane County Circuit Court.
