QuickTake:
Some customers took to social media to lament the closure of the coffee shop, which was among hundreds throughout the country shuttered by Starbucks this week. The company also closed a pick-up only location in Eugene.
A Starbucks cafe on Pioneer Parkway in Springfield closed for good on Sunday, Sept. 28, three days after the company’s chief executive announced it would close 1% of its North American stores.
It was unclear how many employees worked at the location at 1810 Pioneer Parkway West. A Starbucks spokesperson told Lookout Eugene-Springfield she didn’t have information to share on individual locations. She referred a reporter to a message to Starbucks staff from CEO Brian Niccol announcing plans to close underperforming stores.

By Wednesday, Starbucks signage was gone from the building and brown paper hung in the windows.
The company also closed a pick-up store inside the Knight Campus building at the University of Oregon.
Starbucks has not said exactly how many stores were closing. Niccol’s message states the 1% percent decline in stores in fiscal year 2025 accounts for both openings and closures. A statement by Starbucks Workers United says hundreds of stores were closing.
Some customers posted on social media expressing their dismay with the Springfield closure.
“I AM BEYOND SAD!” one person wrote on Reddit in response to a post by a barista who worked at the location. “The staff was all wonderful there and made you feel seen each day that you came in to pick up your order … (Starbucks) corporate talks about trying to bring back the ‘community feel’ to their cafes and closing this particular location is doing the exact opposite of that.”
Employees at the Springfield Starbucks store voted to join the Starbucks Workers United union in 2022, according to Northwest Labor Press.
The letter from Niccol says Starbucks identified stores for closure “where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance.”
The closest Starbucks location to the Pioneer Parkway cafe is inside the nearby Safeway at 1891 Pioneer Parkway East. There is also one at Target on Gateway Street and a standalone cafe on Mohawk Boulevard near 16th Street.
Niccol’s message said Starbucks would “offer transfers to nearby locations where possible” for employees. He also wrote that severance packages would be offered to those who couldn’t be transferred.
The message says Starbucks will end the fiscal year with nearly 18,300 locations in the United States and Canada. The company also plans to redesign 1,000 shops.
According to a statement from Starbucks Workers United, 59 union stores were among those closed. Workers United said it secured benefits for affected union baristas related to severance pay and health benefits following the store closure announcement.
