A U.S. Forest Service firefighter was seriously injured by a falling tree while battling the Emigrant Fire, a Forest Service spokesperson said Friday, Sept. 19.
The tree struck firefighter Chris Stash on Sept. 8, and he continues to receive care at an area hospital, spokesperson Jennifer O’Leary Risdal said.
“The Forest Service is providing support to the firefighter, family and crew,” O’Leary Risdal said in an email.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for his medical expenses and to cover lost income from not being able to work during fire season.
The lightning-caused Emigrant Fire began Aug. 24 roughly 20 miles southeast of Oakridge. It has burned about 32,000 acres and is 41% contained, according to information released Friday by the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1.
The command team assumed management of the fire on Thursday and is overseeing operations involving 766 people in the Willamette National Forest.
