Good morning, it’s Week 2, and this one should be fun.
It’s the No. 6 Oregon Ducks vs. the Oklahoma State Cowboys. It’s Dan Lanning vs. Mike Gundy. It’s rich vs. rich. And we only have to wait until 12:30 p.m. for this thing to get going.
Can the Ducks keep the momentum from their Week 1 blowout? Can an Oklahoma State’s first-time starting quarterback pull off the upset of the season?
Here’s what you need to know as you go about your game day morning, then make sure to stick around for live updates throughout the game.
Oklahoma State player to watch: Zane Flores, quarterback
Oklahoma State likes to throw the football. The problem? Its quarterback hasn’t thrown the football a whole lot. A week after starter Hauss Hejny was injured, the redshirt sophomore Flores will make his first career start. Flores is from Gretna, Nebraska, redshirted his first year, broke his foot last year and made his collegiate debut last week when he came in relief of Hejny. Flores went 13-of-20 for 136 yards, with no touchdowns or turnovers.
“He needs to go out and do what he’s done all his life,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “Play quarterback, go out and play hard, have fun and compete. And our coaches need to put him in a good position.”
Oregon player to watch: Dillon Thieneman, safety
Thieneman was arguably Oregon’s biggest get in the offseason transfer portal cycle, with the Ducks bringing in the one-time Big Ten defensive freshman of the year to lead Oregon’s secondary. While the Ducks showcased a bevy of youth against Montana State, look for Thieneman and his experience to lead the way against an Oklahoma State team that will try to test the Ducks deep.
“Coming in here, I feel like I needed to earn my place to the new guys, to prove myself,” Thieneman said during fall camp. “All the experience I have from my past two years, I wanted to use that as a platform to be a leader and help the younger guys who don’t have as much experience.”
