A man who sustained severe burns after a November explosion in the Santa Clara neighborhood has been charged with arson related to manufacturing a cannabinoid extract.
Derek David Davia, 52, is alleged to have been making marijuana “dabs” through the use of butane fuel, according to a Lane County Sheriff’s Office affidavit.
The affidavit alleges Davia fled the scene of a late-night explosion and fire Nov. 26 on the 3900 block of River Road.
Eugene Springfield Fire in a November news release said a man was found in an apartment more than a mile from the fire scene and then taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. The fire caused heavy damage to a shop building, fire officials said in November.
One other person also sustained severe burns, fire officials said.
Lt. Tim Wallace with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said investigators forwarded case information about Davia to prosecutors who decided to file the felony arson charge and seek an arrest warrant for Davia, who is described in court documents as unhoused.
Lane County Circuit Court Judge Amit Kapoor ordered a warrant for Davia’s arrest Wednesday, April 8.
