A 53-year-old man armed with a knife who refused to leave a home south of Goshen was arrested Tuesday, Feb. 3, after throwing a large piece of broken glass at the face of a Lane County deputy, the sheriff’s office said.
Jason Speed McLaughlin has been charged with unlawfully using a weapon in connection with wielding the shard of glass, Lane County Circuit Court records show. He’s also been charged with first-degree burglary, menacing and resisting arrest.
Deputies responded at about 10 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 33900 block of West Peebles Road to serve a restraining order requiring McLaughlin to leave the residence, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
A sergeant trained in crisis negotiations also responded, speaking with McLaughlin through an open window. Negotiations continued for about 90 minutes before McLaughlin allegedly threw glass at the sergeant.
After further negotiations did not result in McLaughlin leaving the home, a Eugene Police Department sergeant at the scene sent a police dog into the house. The sheriff’s office said in the statement that McLaughlin resisted but was brought into custody and taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into jail.
McLaughlin was also arrested on suspicion of earlier harassing a resident at the home and second-degree animal abuse in connection with injuring a puppy. The sheriff’s office statement said McLaughlin is suspected of cutting and nearly severing an ear off the puppy.
