Cottage Grove police are investigating the death of a man Tuesday, Jan. 20, from an apparent gunshot wound.
Police on Wednesday released the name of the victim, 50-year-old Eusebio Pablo Pablo.
His wife, Albertina Herrera Zarate, spoke Tuesday as officers with the Cottage Grove Police Department and the Lane County Sheriff’s Office worked nearby behind yellow crime tape that blocked off a small section of a crowded mobile home park.
“What I want right now is justice. We have to find out who the person is who killed my husband,” Herrera Zarate said in Spanish, tears streaming down her face.
Cottage Grove police on Wednesday said Pablo’s death is being investigated as a homicide, but investigators had no new information about a suspect.
In a news release Tuesday, police said they responded at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a man unconscious and bleeding on the ground in the 1500 block of Highway 99.
When officers arrived, they found a man with an apparent gunshot wound, police said in a statement.
Police said witnesses told them they heard gunshots and saw an unknown person in dark clothing run from the area, but no suspects have been identified.
As the man’s wife stood with the couple’s children, her voice shook in trying to describe what happened.
“He left yesterday evening and, now, look, he’s not here anymore,” she said.
The victim’s daughter, 17-year-old Jenifer Pablo, said a neighbor knocked loudly on the family’s door early Tuesday to tell her mother about seeing her father injured.
Someone had said that they heard gunshots Monday night, Jenifer Pablo said.
She remembered her father as someone who spoke to her about her future.
“He always told us that we have to study in order to be better in life,” Pablo said. The man’s wife said they had four children, ranging in age from 7 to 22.
She said her father worked in the mountains, harvesting salal plants.
Herrera Zarate said her husband had never told her about receiving any threats, adding that she doubted he would have told her if someone had threatened him.
“What can I do now? My husband is no longer here,” she said.
