Oakridge police are investigating the death of a pedestrian they say was struck by a vehicle on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Police responded to a call at 11:42 p.m. to find a 49-year-old man lying in a parking lot of Church of the Nazarene on the 48100 block of Highway 58, according to a news release Monday, Dec. 22.
Medics with the Oakridge Fire Department provided aid, but the man died just after midnight.
The driver remained at the scene, Oakridge Police Chief Kevin Martin said in an email Tuesday to Lookout Eugene-Springfield. Police are not yet releasing the name of the deceased, Martin said.
Police said they have notified the man’s family, and a family member identified the man to Lookout Eugene-Springfield as Brent Mahan.
“He had a great smile and is loved by many,” said Rae Dodson, Mahan’s aunt, in a text message. Dodson said Mahan had been living unhoused and moved to Oakridge within the last two weeks.
A collision reconstructionist with the Oregon State Police as well as a deputy prosecutor assisted at the scene, in addition to fire personnel, police said.
Anyone with information about the collision may call Oakridge Police Department Senior Officer Valeri Miller at 541-782-4232.
