QuickTake:
The 60-year-old suspect was captured with the help of a police dog and booked into jail on multiple charges.
A standoff between sheriff’s deputies and a 60-year-old Blachly man suspected of assault ended with a house fire and the man’s arrest on Saturday, Oct. 25, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.
Darin Dwayne Watson was booked into Lane County Jail on suspicion of unlawfully using a weapon, a felony, and several misdemeanor charges including assault and resisting arrest.
Watson pleaded guilty Jan. 14 to resisting arrest, and court records show he was also convicted of menacing-constituting domestic violence. Other charges were dismissed, including fourth-degree assault and harassment.
Prosecutors initially charged Watson with unlawfully using a weapon, but a grand jury did not return an indictment with any weapons charge.
Lane County Circuit Judge Debra Velure sentenced Watson to 24 months of probation and 30 days in jail, with credit for time served.
Deputies arrived at about 3 p.m. Oct. 25 to a home on the 20200 block of Highway 36 in Blachly to investigate a reported assault, according to the sheriff’s office. Blachly is an unincorporated community near Triangle Lake roughly 30 miles northwest of Eugene.
Watson reportedly threw items from the home at deputies, who deployed a drone and armored vehicle while staying a safe distance from the home.
“After several hours of negotiation, Watson lit his house [on] fire, which quickly became engulfed. Watson ran out of the home and attempted to escape,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Sunday.
A sheriff’s office K-9, Tito, found Watson in a carport attached to the burning home, with Watson fighting the dog and deputies before being taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s office. A grand jury indicted Watson on a charge of interfering with a law enforcement animal, but that charge was among those dismissed.
Watson was treated at a nearby hospital before being booked into jail on Sunday, according to the sheriff’s office and online jail records. The sheriff’s office said charges relating to the fire were possible, but none was ever fired against Watson.
Lane Fire Authority and Lake Creek Fire responded to the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
